Experience Colorado Springs at Pikes Peak, the local convention and visitors bureau, reported modest gains in its quarterly economic impact report for Jan. 1 through March 31. Because the bureau’s report measures business booked in the quarter for future dates, it’s a sign that tourism and convention business will be in good shape this summer and the rest of the year.

Don Elliman Jr., Director of the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade said, “We’re a little ahead of the curve, and Colorado Springs mirrors the state. The Colorado Springs economy is buoyed by a high-quality, educated work force and, like the state as a whole, has an economy grounded in small entrepreneurial companies. They’re more adaptable to changing times than larger companies, and that’s to our benefit.”

Colorado Springs is #1 Fittest City in America

Men’s Fitness magazine listed Colorado Springs as the #1 fittest city in America, beating out Minneapolis, Albuquerque, Denver and Portland, Ore.

Citing fresh mountain air and the fact that there are more than twice as many health food stores per capita than in any other city, the list is now in its 10th year and meant to encourage cities to be healthier.

Springs Tourism Targeting China

Experience Colorado Springs has hired a local Chinese-American businesswoman on a contract basis to represent the Springs at trade shows in the Los Angeles area. In advance of the Go West Summit, Experience Colorado Springs hosted a breakfast for tour operators and travel writers from China, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore.

Of the roughly 6.3 million visitors a year to the Pikes Peak region, an estimated 6 percent to 8 percent come from other countries. International travelers, Sullivan said, “tend to stay longer and spend more.” And Chinese travelers, the Department of Commerce says, typically spend more than others. In 2006, the average Chinese visitor to the U.S. spent more than $6,000.

INTERNATIONAL VISITORS…Where They’re From: In 2006, the most foreign visitors to the U.S. came from Canada. Following Canada were Mexico, United Kingdom, Japan, Germany, France, South Korea, Australia, Italy and Brazil.

Where They Go: The top U.S. destination for overseas visitors to the U.S. in 2006 was New York, with 29.6 percent of the market share, followed by California, Florida, Hawaii and Nevada in the top five.
